Congress Update

A record number of abstracts have been received for the upcoming congress in Port Elizabeth, making for a diverse and stimulating scientific program. Our Society is honoured to welcome two highly distinguished international guests- Dr Mitch Berger and Dr Reg Haid.

Dr Berger is Professor and Chairman of Neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco and is internationally respected as a leader in neuro-oncology. A former President of the AANS, he is one of the most influential people in modern neurosurgery and will speak on the following topics:

  • Molecular Biology of astrocytic tumours
  • Functional mapping and how this enables us to maximise extent of resection
  • Management of high grade gliomas
  • Concussion in the NFL
  • Patient Safety

Dr Haid is Medical Director of the Piedmont Spine Center in Atlanta, Georgia, and has just served as Scientific Chairman of the AANS Annual Meeting. A dynamic innovator, he is one of the most oustanding neurosurgeons in the area of degenerative spine disease and will address the following topics:

  • Why should neurosurgeons care about the spine?
  • The current role of cervical arthroplasty
  • The role of Global Alignment in Lumbar Degenerative Disease
  • The role of Anterior Lumbar Fusion in Lumbar Degenerative Disease

Our international guests will be joined by a wide range of national experts. In addition to neuro-oncology and spine, we will cover a wide spectrum of neurosurgery including trauma, vascular and paediatric neurosurgery.

A new feature will be small group case discussions on Thursday evening, dealing with Spine, Vascular and Oncology.

We have invited Dr David Anderson, neurologist in Johannesburg, to present a soon-to-be published national guideline on Deep Brain Stimulation, which will be followed by a panel discussion by leading South African neurosurgeons.

Professor Bennie Hartzenberg will give a special invited lecture reflecting on his career in Neurosurgery and Dr Jacques Du Plessis will give the Presidential address prior to the SNSA Business Meeting on Friday afternoon.

The scientific program is currently being finalised and will be published on the website by mid June.

We are pleased to announce that the SNSA Exco has established a prize worth R30,000 for the best abstract by a registrar or recently qualified neurosurgeon and expect this will raise the standard of presentations yet more!

The scientific sessions will be rounded off by an exciting social program hosted by Meeting Chairman Dr Justin Basson and his local organising committee from the University of the Free State.

We look forward to seeing you in Nelson Mandela Bay.
